Timkat /Epiphany

Ethiopia has history way back over 3000 years and in all those years each generation has been placing his own finger print in most major cities of Ethiopia. Ethiopian historical attraction covers the ancient town of Axum, with its amazing carved obelisks and ancient civilization, including the original Ark of the Covenant; Lalibela known as the real wonder of the world with its remarkable rock-hewn churches; Gondar the Camelot of Africa, with its magnificent castles and palaces.

Lake Tana, source of the Blue Nile, is the largest lake with 37 islands. Ura Kidanemihiret and Azwa Mariyam are among the iconic reach monasteries to be visited on the Lake dating back to 14th century.

In this route the Axum stales, the Lalibela churches and the castles of Gondar are registered by UNESCO.

Timkat /Epiphany

The most important festival in the Ethiopian calendar, Timkat is the Ethiopian Orthodox celebration of Epiphany. On the eve and main day of Timkat/epiphany men and women fellow shammas with festival processions whilst the Tabot, a symbol of the Ark of the Covenant, is taken on the head of the priest to place/ Meadow beside a body of water. The next morning this is then blessed by the priest before the worshipers enter the body of water in the ritual reenactment. Celebrations occur throughout the country but our pick of locations are Addis Ababa, Gondar and Lalibela as the city really comes to life. Especially in Gondar, the dry swimming pool of Emperor Fasilidas is and used as the center stage. The ceremony creates a sea of white robed worshipers and priests and the splendor and majesty is awe-inspiring
